Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation
The Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation (CEI) at GateWay Community College
is the only business incubator in Phoenix that provides integrated services,
space and support for entrepreneurs and small emerging companies.
GateWay received a combined $6 million in funding from the
US Department of
Commerce, Economic Development Administration, the
City of Phoenix, a corporate
donation from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, and voter-approved General
Obligation Bonds passed in 2004.
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and GateWay president Dr. Giovannini held a press
conference announcing the Incubator project on July 14, 2009. Planning and design
for the Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation began in February 2010, followed by
the groundbreaking ceremony held October 28, 2010.
The center will provide multi-purpose spaces to accommodate the needs of various
emerging industries/businesses. A full array of services will be available, including
administrative and technical support, guidance and mentoring and exposure to a network
of local business resources and professionals. The CEI incubation program
includes:
- Business planning and management services
- Introductions to angel investors and early stage venture firms
- Dedicated recruiting staff to source and screen job candidates
- Patent advisement services
- Mentoring program
- Collaboration with University research teams
- Coordination with public and private partners
- Lunch Seminars
Businesses that align with
the career training programs offered at GateWay have the opportunity to establish potential
partnerships with faculty and staff, providing a place for students to experience hands-on
learning through internships.
Construction of the business incubator will be completed in two phases, with the first
phase being completed in October 2011. Phase I, which is more than 12,600 square feet, includes:
- Wet and Dry Labs
- Office Space
- Conference Rooms
- Collaborative Spaces
- Outdoor Patio
- Kitchen
- 24/7 Access and Security
Phase II will be finished in March 2012 and includes 5,500 square feet of
light industrial space.
