Honors Program
Overview
GateWay encourages talented student scholars to challenge themselves
further through our Honors Program. Add additional distinction to your
degree, while broadening your learning experience through one of the
following options.
The Honors Experience
Students who meet eligibility requirements may enroll in various honors courses or convert their regular courses into Honors courses by completing special projects.
For students still considering commitment to the full honors program,
this is a wonderful option, allowing the following advantages:
- Honors (HO) designation on your academic transcript next to all
applicable courses
- Opportunities to qualify for spring semester scholarships
- Fee waivers:
| Enrolled Credit Hours |
Fee Waived |
| 12+ |
$325 |
| 9-11 |
$244 |
| 6-8 |
$163 |
| 3-5 |

Students must meet the following program requirements to qualify:
- Completion of 12 credit hours in the Maricopa Community Colleges
District with a GPA of 3.25 or higher or be a President's Scholarship
recipient
- Maintain a GPA of 3.25 to remain an honors student
- Must be able to provide proof of US citizenship or eligible
non-citizen status as required by Arizona HB 2008
The Honors Program
This program is designed to challenge students beyond the Honors
Experience. Advantages to participating in this program include all listed
in the honors experience, plus:
- Identification on your transcript as an honors program
graduate.
- Receiving an Honors Program cord at Commencement
Students must meet the following program requirements to graduate with the Honors Program
graduate designation:
- Complete 15 or more hours of honors coursework
- Maintain a MCCCD cumulative GPA of 3.50
- Receive a 'B' or better in all honors credits
- Demonstrate evidence of leadership, service or contribution to the
college or community
Criteria for Honors Projects
Students may convert a class into an Honors course by completing an
additional project in class. The following criteria should be met in all
Honors projects:
- Academic rigor worthy of the number of credits awarded (a project in
a 3-credit course needs to be more rigorous than that in a 1-credit
course)
- Projects can still be varied (original work, experiential work,
etc), however each must include research, writing (using whatever style
is appropriate to the academic field studied), and presentation
components
- Research (use of professional or academic sources)
- Writing (paraphrase, citation, bibliography)
- Presentation (verbal component in front of an audience)
