General Information About Sessions

The designs of the sessions are based on the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education developed by the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. According to ACRL, an information literate individual is able to:

  • Determine the extent of information needed
  • Access the needed information effectively and efficiently
  • Evaluate information and its sources critically & incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base and value system
  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
  • Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally

Adapted from the above ACRL standards, MCCCD Library Instruction Council also created similar guidelines through a tool calledGetting It Right with more details on the five criteria and possible scenarios for students information needs.
