Service Learning

Overview

Service learning is a type of experiential education that combines classroom curriculum with meaningful service in the community to create student learning through use of oral and written reflection about the service experience.

Service learning challenges students to:

• Develop a sense of civic responsibility
• Participate in lifelong civic engagement
• Strengthen communities by getting involved

Service learning allows learners to apply classroom theories to authentic and practical situations by connecting it to the needs of the local and global community.

Goals of Service Learning

• Involves collaboration between students and the community
• Addresses significant community needs
• Enriches the traditional classroom learning
• Provides structured time for student reflection
• Fosters the development of civic and social responsibility
