Bilingual Nursing Fellowship Program
Overview
This program is designed to increase the number of RNs who read, write and speak fluently in both
Spanish and English.
Funding from the office of U.S. Congressman Ed Pastor allows the
Hispanic Nursing Fellowship the opportunity to address the critical shortage
of RNs in Arizona, specifically those able to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients.
Both GateWay and South Mountain Community College are federally designated
Hispanic-Serving Institutions. GateWay offers the nursing instruction, while
South Mountain provides the program's general education courses.
Selection into the program is through a competitive process. Once
accepted, fellows will work toward the completion of an AAS degree in
Nursing. Students accepted receive
extensive academic support and mentoring.
The Nursing Program Pathway is offered as part of the Bilingual Nursing
Fellowship Program, providing multiple exit points for employment. By enrolling in the nursing pathway, students will
complete:
- The Nurse Assisting Program
- The Fast Track Practical Nursing
Program
- The Maricopa Community College District Nursing Program
Student expectations include:
- Showing a willingness and ability to attend college-level classes
each semester, including the summer.
- Having transportation to South Mountain CC, GateWay and various clinical sites in the
Phoenix area.
