Medical Transcription
Overview
Medical Transcription is a healthcare profession used in converting
verbal recordings of medical information from doctors and healthcare staff
into text format. This information is used throughout patient assessment and
treatment processes.
Medical Transcriptionists, otherwise known as MT's or Medical Language
Specialists, learn how to understand and transcribe a
variety of medical reports. Responsibilities of an MT include:
- understanding medical
terminology
- developing a broad knowledge of the human body
- utilizing strong verbal and written communication skills
- developing strong grammatical and spelling skills
- operating transcription equipment
MT's should be detail-oriented and familiar with using computers.
Jobs are available in hospitals, physicians' offices, insurance companies,
Medical Transcription services, and many Transcriptionists work from home.

- Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Transcription

Employment Outlook
The demand for MT's is expected to increase as the need for healthcare
increases. In Arizona, these positions are
expected to increase 20% or more in the next 10 years. MT's earn an hourly range of $10.22 to $20.15 for a salary
range of $21,258 to $41,912.
