Overview

Medical Transcription is a health care profession used in converting verbal recordings of medical information from doctors and health care staff into text format. This information is used throughout patient assessment and treatment processes.

Medical Transcriptionists, otherwise known as MT's or Medical Language Specialists, learn how to understand and transcribe a variety of medical reports. Responsibilities of an MT include:

  • Understanding medical terminology
  • Developing a broad knowledge of the human body
  • Utilizing strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Developing strong grammatical and spelling skills
  • Operating transcription equipment

MT's should be detail-oriented and familiar with using computers. Jobs are available in hospitals, physicians' offices, insurance companies, Medical Transcription services, and many Transcriptionists work from home.
