Overview
Work in Occupational Safety & Health professions involves inspecting places of
employment for unsafe equipment and working conditions. Specialists follow-up on
many issues including employee complaints of unsafe work practices.
Job requirements
include:
- Spending a great deal of time in the field
- Inspecting and
enforcing a wide range of laws, regulations, policies and procedures
- Researching, developing and implementing programs to correct safety and
health problems
OSH specialists assist employers in complying with the
Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) regulations and standards. In the
event of a violation, unsafe practices are recorded and brought to the
attention of the employer, who is given a date by which the problem needs to be
corrected.
Specialists need specific written and verbal skills
to market and teach safety programs to all employees. Employment is found in many levels of government agencies,
and public
and private businesses.
