For 20 years, Mesa Community College has hosted the annual Empty Bowls event in Mesa and now it’s expanding its Fighting Hunger One Bowl at a Time program to GateWay Community College.

The community, along with students, faculty and staff of GateWay, are invited to participate to help fight hunger, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 19, in the Amphitheater on the GateWay campus, by making a donation of $10 for a one of a kind bowl.

The Fighting Hunger One Bowl at a Time is a program that focuses on helping to feed the hungry. All proceeds go directly to the non-profit Paz de Cristo Community Center, which provides anti-hunger and empowerment support for the homeless, unemployed, working poor and their families.

Bowls are made throughout the year and donated to the event by local ceramic artists and students from throughout the colleges within Maricopa Community College District.

In addition to the bowls, there will be a silent auction with the winners announced at 1:30 p.m.

In 1992, the Art Department at Mesa Community College presented the idea as a way to support a nationwide movement for feeding the needy and homeless.

Since the beginning of Empty Bowls, MCC has worked with Paz de Cristo Community Center in Mesa, AZ. All proceeds are donated directly to the nonprofit that provides anti-hunger and empowerment support for the East Valley's homeless, unemployed, working poor and their families. In 1992, the event brought in $2,400 and last year over $18,000 was donated to Paz de Cristo.
