OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF GATEWAY COMMUNITY COLLEGE ATHLETICS
After their best season to date, the GateWay Geckos baseball team clinched the no. 1 seed in the region this weekend with a sweep of the Paradise Valley Pumas. On Friday, the Geckos beat Paradise Valley 5-1. Trevor Plautz had four hits for all four of his at-bats and pitcher Jonathan Cuellar sealed the win, pitching 7 and a third innings while only giving up one run. Saturday, the Geckos rematched against the Pumas for their final regular season game. GateWay jumped off to an early lead, putting six runs on the board in the first inning and crushing the Pumas' hope of making a come back. The team held their lead the whole game, winning 13-7. Head coach Rob Shabansky is extremely proud of the team and is looking forward to winning out at Regionals this weekend to head to nationals, where the team is ranked no. 5 among National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II teams, in front of both the Paradise Valley and Mesa community colleges.
Regionals consists of two, best-of-three game series played this weekend (May 5 - 7) and next weekend (May 12 -14). Both GateWay games will be played at Gene Autry Park in Mesa.
