Two weeks ago, the men's and women's soccer team took their first trip to Camp Tontozona in Payson, Ariz. The men's team went from Sunday, August 14, until Tuesday, August 16 and the girl's went from Tuesday, August 16 until Thursday, August 18.
Camp Tontozona's vision is "to provide a life changing experience to everyone who comes to Camp Tontozona." From the cliff diving, to the team building, to the hikes, their vision was achieved for the GateWay soccer players.
The ideal day started at 4:30 a.m. Players did a lot of fitness activities and extra training to prepare themselves for the season ahead. They also hiked up Mount Kush, a staple of Camp Tontozona.
Freshman goalkeeper Sabrina Crawford said her favorite part of the trip was how the women's team reacted to all the bugs. She said there was a lot of screaming and freaking out when the bugs would come around. "I was always the one who had to deal with them," Crawford said. "I would pick them up and take them outside."
Coach Greg Johnson said that the most important part of the trip for the men's team was the team building exercises they did with Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach Jaime Long.
Johnson said that this trip will definitely become a yearly venture. "It helps bring the teams together and will hopefully have a lasting impact on the season ahead," Johnson said.
