From the beginning of the season, it was very apparent that the women’s soccer team was something special. They had a slew of returning players and a tenacity to win. They secured victories in their first three games of the season, and though they faced adversity, they forged onwards.
As the weeks of the season flew by, the team continued to be successful. Even after losing several games in a row as well as losing their starting goalkeeper, they found ways to win. Players consistently stepped up to the plate when they were needed and helped the team to victory.
Their hard work and talent paid off. With a 1-0 win over Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz. on October 17, the ladies secured their first ever playoff spot.
For their first time in the playoffs, the Geckos held their own. While in Tucson, Ariz. they beat Pima Community College 2-1, securing a spot in the semifinals against Scottsdale Community College. The Geckos put up a fight against Scottsdale, but ultimately lost 3-0, ending their record-breaking season.
Even though they didn’t go to the ACCAC Championships, the season was full of many highs and many former records were shattered. The 28 goals scored were the most ever scored in a single season.
Over the course of the season, three players were given ACCAC weekly honors: Sabrina Crawford and Tiffany Honeywell for Goalkeeper of the Week and Denisse Santos for Player of the Week. Sabrina Crawford also was the second women’s soccer player ever to be recognized by the NJCAA as Goalkeeper of the Week.
Two Geckos also made the ACCAC All-Conference teams. Sam Bush was recognized on the 2nd Team All-Conference for the second season in a row and Denisse Santos made the 1st Team All-Conference.
This season was a step in the right direction for the soccer program and will provide something to build upon in the seasons to come.
