Competitive Scholarships
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is open to all U.S. citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing and who meet the requirements listed below.

Available to students who receive a Pell Grant. Proof of grant must be shown. Awards up to $5,000.

Deadline: March 4, 2014

Requirements:

  • The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship.
  • The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program or internship eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
  • The applicant is studying or interning abroad for at least four weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be in one country for at least four consecutive weeks.
  • The applicant is studying or interning abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the U.S. Department of State's current Travel Warning list.

Foundation for Global Scholars General Scholarship

The Foundation for Global Scholars is a nonprofit organization serving U.S. undergraduate and graduate students pursuing accredited study abroad programs. Empowering future leaders to become better prepared for the fast-changing global marketplace and interdependent world through scholarships for international study.

Awards between $1,000 and $2,500, amounts vary.

  • You must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5

Fund for Education Abroad

The Fund for Education Abroad is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships.

Awards range up to $10,000. The number of scholarships awarded vary up to 20.

Deadline: January 17, 2014 at 11:59pm PST.

Requirements

  • Must be US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as undergraduates in US universities/colleges who plan to study abroad for at least four weeks between May 2014 and May 2015.
  • The financial support for these scholarships is provided by generous donors, who are committed to increasing study abroad opportunities for dedicated American students.

GateWay Community College Scholarships
GateWay Community College Study Abroad Scholarship

Awards of $250 or $500 to qualified students.

Deadline: March 28, 2014

GateWay Community College is offering scholarships of $250 or $500 each to qualified students who are participating in a Maricopa Colleges Study Abroad Program. The essay, the transcript and the application form must be turned in to the International Education Office in IE3115 by March 28, 2014 in order to guarantee consideration for this award. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

In order to qualify for the award, the student must meet the following conditions:

Requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in GateWay Community College or another Maricopa Community College during the Spring 2014 semester as an Arizona resident.
  2. Have earned a GPA at MCCD of at least 2.5 with at least 3 credit hours. The applicant must provide a recent transcript from the college. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
  3. Plan to take the Maricopa Study Abroad course(s) for a grade.
  4. Write a 500 word (two pages) essay explaining what he or she hopes to gain by participating in the MCCCD Summer Program. These are the guide questions:
    • What are your educational goals for studying in Prague or your program of choice and how do you plan to achieve them?
    • Have you ever traveled outside of the United States? If so, where have you been and what have you learned from your experience?
    • Why did you choose to sign up for the Prague study abroad program or other study abroad program?
    • Propose an outcome project, such as making a display or hosting a presentation about your experience at GateWay after the trip. This outcome is required for scholarship recipients. Feel free to be creative about your project!
  5. Obtain a letter of recommendation from one GateWay Community College faculty member or from your current Maricopa Community College.
Giveaway Scholarships
GotChosen Monthly Scholarship

Enter for a chance to win $1,000. Occurs monthly.

Requirements:

  • Open to United States and International students.
  • No GPA, essay or long forms to fill out, just register and apply!

Minorities/Interest Group Scholarships
Foundation for Global Scholars

Awards anywhere between $1,000 and $2,500. Applicants must have received or will receive a Pell Grant.

Requirements:

  • At the time of applying for any of the Foundation scholarships, you must be enrolled in a US college or university where transfer credit from an academic program abroad will be applied to your US degree being earned.
  • You must be a US citizen
  • Your class standing is one of the following:
    • Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
    • Medical School
    • Law School
    • Graduate School
    • Community College of Junior College
    • You must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5/4.0
    • Your transcript is a required piece of the application. It must list 1) the name of the institution, 2) your full name, 3) your declared major (if applicabble), and 4) your cumulative grade point average.
  • Your program abroad is one of the following:
    • Academic Semester or Year Abroad (taking classes at an overseas university)
    • Service Learning
    • Internship
    • Short Term Program
    • Research
    • Summer Programs
    • Other program which meets all eligibility requirements
  • If awarded a scholarship, you will have one year from the date of your award email to provide the necessary confirmation of participation (and other requested information) to collect your scholarship check from the Foundation.

Fund for Education Abroad Rainbow Scholarship

Available to any student who identifies as LGBTQ. There are a up to 20 scholarships awarded and the amount varies up to $10,000.

Deadline: The application for the 2014-2015 academic year (summer 2014, fall 2014, spring 2015) will open on November 18, 2013.

Requirements:

  • This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving LGBTQI student who aims to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program. Applicants must meet general FEA scholarship eligibility requirements & preferences. Students interested in being considered for this annual scholarship should indicate this through their application forms

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Offers a variety of scholarships with different amounts to be awarded for people of Hispanic background. There are a number of general requirements that must be met to qualify for any scholarship awarded by or through Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Some specialized scholarships also have additional requirements.

Deadline: Varies

Requirements:

  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent)
  • Be a U.S. citizen OR legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551
  • Be pursuing, or plan to pursue, your first undergraduate or graduate degree
  • Plan to apply for federal financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning January 2013
  • Plan to enroll full-time as an undergraduate or graduate student at a U.S. accredited institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Guam in the upcoming academic year.

Maricopa Community Colleges Scholarships
Merit-Based Study Abroad Scholarship

Awards up to $1,000.

Requirements:

  • Must have applied to and been accepted into a study abroad program at MCC.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.
  • Must complete essay topic.
  • Must be able to demonstrate lawful presence in the United States. See acceptable documents to establish lawful presence.
