GateWay Student Overcomes Obstacles to Help Others in Future Career

As a phlebotomist working at Banner University Medical Center, Danitza Hernandez was used to working with patients in the healthcare field. But, after spending days in the trauma rooms, she became motivated to expand her career and help even more people. It was in those moments she decided to go back to school for Surgical Technology.

As a student with disabilities, choosing the right school was especially important. But, she always knew GateWay was the right choice. “I have always wanted to go to GateWay because I knew that it had a lot of programs for the medical field. I went to talk to a counselor and she was very thorough and patient with every question I had,” Hernandez said.

In addition to enrolling in the Surgical Technology program, she also joined the EXCEL program. The EXCEL program is a student success program providing student scholars with assistance to navigate college toward degree completion and university transfer.

“My experience at GateWay has been nothing but blessings. I have had teachers that accommodate me and care about my feelings, especially since I am a student with disabilities,” Hernandez said. “I have been neglected in the past by teachers and GateWay has a program especially for people with disabilities. You have a team that understands and wants to help and work with you. I am glad that I have chosen GateWay as my college and I do not regret my decision.”

After overcoming obstacles in pursuit of her future career, she had this to say to future students who may be in a similar situation. “You can achieve things with the help of others. Never feel discouraged about asking questions. A minor setback does not define you as a person and you will learn from mistakes and move forward.”

Future plans for Hernandez include becoming a surgical technician at Banner University. With that goal in mind, she sums up her philosophy on life and said, “Never give up regardless of how many obstacles get in the way.”
