James Smith is a senior machining instructor with Gateway Community College at the Central City Campus in Phoenix, AZ. In this role, James leads a team providing all aspects of training in machining, including manual machining, CNC machining, and metrology. A big believer in adult education, James supports student success and bridging the gap between academia and industry. James is passionate about helping chip away at the current manufacturing skills gap.
James is a qualified NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) machining instructor and holds all level one machining certifications from NIMS. James is no stranger to machining, having spent 35 years as a machinist in aerospace, medical, semiconductor, and general machining industries. James helps career orientated adults to acquire required skills to enter the workforce of manufacturing, re-careering, and continued post-secondary education. James’ focus is passing on many years of learned tribal knowledge from 35 years of work experience to students within the machining programs at Gateway Central City.
