About/Bio

Joseph Swaba

Dr. Joseph Swaba has earned over a dozen degrees or certificates with the first being an Associate of Arts from Mesa Community College, the highest being a Doctorate of Education from Northern Arizona University, and the most recent being a Graduate Certificate in Strategic Global Communication from Purdue University. Dr. Swaba is a veteran of the United States Army and has been teaching communication classes at GateWay for over 20 years. 

Professional highlights include:

  • Communications faculty with more than 20 years of experience in higher education, including academic and student affairs, program development, strategic planning and resource development.
  • Recipient of the Maricopa Center for Civic Participation Civic Infusion Fellowship to engage student veterans in civic initiatives.
  • In 2016, received the John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award and the Diversity Advisory Council Award for his work with veterans on Battlemarks.org.
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive
  • B.A. in Communication from Metropolitan State University
  • M.A. in English from Northern Arizona University
  • M.A. in Education Technology from the University of Phoenix
  • Graduate certificates in Strategic Communications and Professional Writing from Purdue University and NAU, respectively
  • Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from NAU.

Dr. Swaba also loves to travel abroad when the opportunity arises and ride his motorcycle on the highways at home when the weather is good.
