History

GateWay Early College High School was established on campus in 1995. In 2004, the Early College component was added to the high school resulting in a new name of GateWay Early College High School (GWECHS). The first of its kind in Phoenix, serving as a new kind of learning institution for underserved urban high school students. This is a special place that provides the rigor of college-level work in high school along with critical academic support from a dedicated and caring staff.

What is the Early College Difference

GateWay Early College High School offers the opportunity of a lifetime for many students in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Our students graduate better prepared for post-secondary education without remediation and/or the workplace with marketable skills.

Our work begins with the simple recognition that the quality of the interpersonal relationship between a student and a teacher is a powerful factor in achievement. The high school is not only a place for learning but also an engaged community. Students can walk down the halls and feel comfortable because the Gateway Early College High School Staff has made it a priority to actually get to know their names and interact with them and their families.

Learning about our students, teaching and mentoring is an essential part of our success. The rigor and intellectual challenge of required coursework like Freshman Success, Public Speaking, Economics and 12th Grade Capstone in addition to applied Community based  Service Projects serves to enhance the lives of our students beyond the classroom.

Dual and Concurrent Enrollment

Getting an early start on your college education can definitely pay off later on, and we’re here to help you get that early start. In fact, studies show that students experience greater academic success in college when they complete dual enrollment courses in high school. Learn more.

Gateway Early College High School offers an additional advantage to students who take college classes.  Not only can college classes be funded through the high school for eligible students, but they also receive concurrent enrollment credit as part of their required high school credits toward graduation.
