Get ready to tee off into a week of excitement at The GateWay Open Spirit Week! Swing into action and join fellow students, faculty, and staff for a week experience filled with events, competitions, and themed activities. Don't miss out on this par-fect opportunity to chip in and show off your GateWay spirit! Check out the daily events below.
 

Monday, Mar. 18 | Tee Up for Spirit Week


All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to show off their Gecko Pride by wearing their favorite GateWay shirts, hats, pins, and gear as we officially tee off GateWay's first Spirit Week!

  • Celebrate National Awkward Moments Day | 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. | AF Walkway
    Stop by for a swingin' good time and strike a pose in front of the GateWay backdrop! Grab some goofy props and get ready for an awkwardly awesome photo op. Don't worry, we promise all the snapshots will be available for participants to cherish and chuckle over!
     
  • Sidewalk Chalk Drawing Competition | 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. | AF Walkway
    Unleash your inner artist and join the colorful chaos at GateWay's Sidewalk Chalk Drawing Competition! The College Deans will be the judges, so bring your A-game for a chance to snag a custom award certificate and eternal bragging rights! Choose from any of the following design categories:
    • Best Echo the Gecko
    • Best Street Art Style
    • Best Anime Echo Style
    • Best Dash Doodle
    • Best Flower Design
    • Best Abstract Art
       

Tuesday, Mar. 19 | Hit a Birdie with Backyard Games


  • Celebrate National Backyard Day | 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Amphitheater
    Flex your GateWay spirit by engaging in some friendly competition through yard games with your classmates and co-workers. Games include Corn Hole, Spike Ball, Volleyball, putting green, chip golf into bucket/closest to flag, ping pong, hula hoops, frisbees, and more!

  • Churros with Counselors & College Police | 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Outside Center for Student Life
    Join us and meet the GateWay Community College Counselors and College Police. All students, staff, and faculty members are welcome to indulge in churros courtesy of the counseling department. 

  • St. Mary's Food Bank Volunteer | 11 a.m to 1 p.m.
    Spread GateWay Spirit by volunteering and helping your fellow Geckos distribute goods from St. Mary’s Food Bank to those in need!
     

Wednesday, Mar. 20 | Geckoland Blossom Bash Country Club


  • Blossom Bash | 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. | Outside MA Building East Entrance
    Stop by Geckoland: Blossom Bash for FREE food, refreshments, inflatables, games, activities, and more, all day long! Hosted by Student Life, Counseling, Advising, and GWCC Student Leaders.

  • University Transfer Fair | 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. | Outside MA Building East Entrance
    Over 20 participating Universities will be on-campus to help students start planning their next steps!

  • Wellness Fair | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Outside MA Building East Entrance
    In collaboration with community vendors and GateWay academic program chairs, GWCC Counseling will host stations promoting improved financial, physical, emotional, medical, psychological, and social practices. Dash the Therapy Dog will also be available, with some of his friends! Open to students, faculty, and staff. 
     

Thursday, Mar. 21 | Hole-In-One Chili Cook Off


  • Chili Cook Off | 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. | 2nd Floor IE Patio
    Are you celebrated for having a GREAT chili recipe? Think you have what it takes to take down your fellow Geckos’ chili? Then take part in the “Hole-In-One Chili Cook Off”. Every chili recipe will be sampled and judged by a panel of GateWay judges, with the top three winning prizes! Sign up here to bring chili*, condiments, or extras. 

    *Chili recipe must be homemade and brought to campus in a crockpot/instapot to keep warm. 

  • DEI Center Art Gallery Spring 2024 Exhibition Opening | 4 to 7 p.m.
    Chris Vena: Likeness: A collection of new works by artist Chris Vena that will showcase everyday life scenarios of individuals in and around the Valley, including the artist himself. Each painting will capture the persona and emotional lives of diverse people throughout the region, emphasizing the interconnection and interdependence across the Valley.
     

Friday, Mar. 22 | Par for the Course Service Day


  • Celebrate Service to the Community | All Day-All Week | Your Campus or Your Favorite Organization
    As an employee of GWCC, we consistently celebrate service to our community as a College of Wellbeing!   

    This Spirit Week service day allows you to contribute to a wide variety of projects that are personally meaningful to you or have been chosen by your home campus. Whether volunteering at a local non-profit organization or perhaps helping someone whom you know is in need, the choice is yours. Our goal is to see our GWCC community involvement grow and to collaborate and contribute to your department, students, or peers. We would love to see 100% participation from our employees and students.

    What to do...
    1. Pick a cause near and dear to your heart!
    2. Fill out this form to let us know what you are doing.
    3. Find a time to provide this service this week (or day). Please work with your departments and supervisors!
    4. Have fun and create positive change and impact on our community!
