Academic Advising

Academic advising is more than selecting courses for an upcoming semester or making a plan to graduate. Students should initiate and maintain contact with advisors to discuss situations and issues affecting academic performance, including:  

  • Enrolling in Gecko Gear Up
  • Determining class selection 
  • Prior Learning Assessment Evaluation
  • Academic, professional and technical programs 
  • Exploration of educational and life goals
  • Information on campus resources and services
  • Selection and sequencing of courses  
  • University transfer options 
  • Work and family commitments

Advisors will listen and respond to personal interests and concerns, suggest useful college resources, share college and departmental policies and procedures, make appropriate referrals for student support services and provide guidance and assistance with academic, career, and life goals.

In order to see an advisor, you must have completed the Admissions Process. 

Academic Advisors

Nursing

All students interested in Registered Nursing, Practical Nursing, Advanced Placement Registered Nursing, Concurrent Enrollment Nursing (CEP) and Veterans/LPN Bridge will be required to attend a Nursing Information/Advising Session before meeting with an advisor. After attending an information session, students who complete the attendance form will be emailed a link for all nursing advisors that allows them to schedule future appointments.

Transfer Equivalency

When meeting with an advisor, you will review your existing credits from other institutions. To help guide you through transfer equivalencies, please visit the Maricopa Community College Transfer Equivalency System.  Note that the equivalencies shown in the system are for informational purposes only and are subject to change without notice. Although new equivalencies are added each day, it is not possible to include all equivalencies. Speak with your advisor about previous coursework and applicability of your credits. 

Advising Tools in Your Student Center

It is now easier than ever to keep track of your education plan and check the progress of your degree online in your Student Center at maricopa.edu. All of these tools can be found by clicking the “Other Academic” drop-down list in your Student Center.
