GateWay Community College’s World Explorers Club packed 13,824 meals for hungry children around the world at the start of spring semester. Students participated in a volunteer event for Feed My Starving Children on Jan. 24.

The club packaged meals for those less fortunate around the world. Seventeen students participated in a group of 44 volunteers in packing 64 boxes of food, equaling approximately enough meals to feed 37 children for an entire year.

Feed My Starving Children’s mission is to impact the lives of malnourished children living in nearly 70 countries, including Dominican Republic, Ghana, Nicaragua and Thailand. In January 2014, approximately 1,207,400 meals were prepared at Feed My Starving Children in Tempe. In fiscal year 2013-2014, the Tempe location prepared 14 million meals for children.

“Feed My Starving Children is very inspiring to me, and I definitely plan to arrange another visit,” said Sona Malakyan, World Explorers Club treasurer.

The World Explorers Club provides a supportive environment for new and returning international students and promotes the diversity of cultures all over the world. In the Fall 2013, the World Explorers Club had 44 members, the largest membership yet.
