GateWay Community College is launching a tutoring service especially for veterans. The service is the result of a partnership with Support Education & Employment for Vets (S.E.E.4Vets) a local non-profit and was unveiled on April 22, during the Student Veteran’s Summit at GateWay’s Career Center.

Though this partnership, tutoring will be available for math, English, reading and the Nursing Veterans' Bridge Course. Services will be provided at the brand new veterans center on campus as well as online.

"The goals include creating opportunities for student success and helping students become more independent in their learning," said Jake Rivera, Dean of Enrollment Management.

To be eligible, student veterans need to be currently enrolled in the course they are seeking tutoring assistance with. Tutoring sessions may be available in-person, group and online video chat formats.

The Student Veterans’ Summit is a mix-and-mingle for student veterans to talk with employers and get ideas of what types of careers they could pursue and what is needed in that career path. During the Summit S.E.E.4Vets announced the launch of the program and presented a check for GateWay to support the program.

"The reason to get involved with veterans at the community college level is that statistics show that a large number of military service members are transitioning to community colleges and using their Post-9/11 GI Bill. Because they have been away from the educational system for a number of years, tutoring assistance becomes an important part of success. S.E.E.4 Vets wants to ensure their academic success," said Ray Torres, S.E.E.4Vets Chairman of the Board.

GateWay Community College has earned a Military Friendly College designation for the past five years. This year, the college opened a veteran’s center which is aimed at providing veterans with a space to study, interact and receive services.

S.E.E.4Vets is a 501-c (3) with a mission to accelerate the support of men and women who have served our nation in uniform as productive members of the civilian community, including the pursuit of academic or certification goals, and greater opportunity to succeed and advance in the workplace.
