Student Engages in Fun Activity at DISCOVER summer camp at GateWay Community College

GateWay Community College is offering a variety of summer experiences for kids and teens through DISCOVER Summer Camp.

Camp Gecko runs all summer and provides an educational and safe summer camp for kids who have completed kindergarten through age 12. Each week provides new camp activities, arts and crafts, science experiments and field trips, and families can sign up for as many weeks as needed.

In addition, there are also three week-long sessions for ages 11 to 14 that mix imagination and creativity into themed camps. Each camp is $150 and includes breakfast and lunch.

The three sessions are:

Session I: Young Stormtroopers & Draw, Make, Create

June 19-22, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Explore your imagination and inner strength while having fun. This camp mixes relay races, games and team building activities to build new friendships. In the afternoon, show your creative side and make your own masterpiece while learning special art techniques.

Session II: Health U & Safety Techniques

July 10-14, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Learn how to add healthy habits to your everyday life, spark creativity and develop a positive attitude. In the afternoon, have fun while learning about ways to be safe. Participants will receive American Heart Association certificates of completion, make emergency kits and more.

Session III: Picture This & Our Story

July 17-20, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Discover how to take pictures, capture a moment and more. In the afternoon, explore your own unique story. Storytelling can captivate others while connecting us to our innermost selves. Come tell your story and listen to the stories of others!

Business Launch Camp

In addition, SEED SPOT and the Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation are joining forces to deliver an entrepreneurial summer camp for teens called BUSINESS LAUNCH, which will bring high school students together from all over the Valley to learn about social entrepreneurship and for-profit entrepreneurship. Students take a hands-on approach to developing a business over the course of a week and pitch their company to a panel of judges who award prizes to the team with the best overall idea and presentation. Applications are open through April 15 on the CEI website.

Ages: 15 - 18

When: June 26-30, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: $125

Sarah Hanley, coordinator of student services, said the camps help build connections and contribute to GateWay’s commitment to the community.

“We’re going to provide a fun, comprehensive experience for kids to learn, explore and create,” she said.

GateWay is centrally located in Phoenix close to Tempe and along the light rail. Kids can attend multiple day camps or just one. Applications for 2017 summer camps begin in April.
