As part of Chancellor Maria Harper-Marinick’s vision for the District and GateWay Community College playing a key role in fulfilling the workforce development piece, the college will be acquiring the leadership of the Southwest Skill Center. This new direction was announced to employees in January by the presidents at GateWay Community College and Estrella Mountain Community College.

At one time in the District's history, it was managed by leadership at the former Maricopa Skill Center, now known as GateWay Community College’s Workforce Innovation and Strategic Partnerships Division, which includes Trade and Technical Training program offerings, Apprenticeships, career services and community outreach.

On July 1, 2016, MSC officially adopted the GateWay Community College name and a new structure to serve all GateWay students more efficiently and aid them in finding the right educational fit.

According to GateWay President Steven Gonzales, a team has been assembled, with representation from both colleges, to discuss and develop a transition plan and timeline. Updates will be shared as the team makes progress.
