New initiative aims to address rising student absenteeism by leveraging the positive impact of youth sports on engagement, confidence, and school readiness.
Phoenix, AZ—GateWay Community College and Arizona Soccer Skills Academy have joined forces to launch the GateWay Soccer Scholarship Fund, a community-driven initiative designed to help combat rising school absenteeism rates by engaging young people through organized sport. The fund will provide full-tuition scholarships for local youth to participate in summer soccer programs—including camps, clinics, and leagues—run by Arizona Soccer Skills Academy.
In recent years, schools across Arizona and the nation have seen increased absenteeism—particularly among elementary and middle school students. Studies show that students involved in sports are more likely to attend school regularly, stay motivated, and build habits of accountability and self-confidence that translate to the classroom.
"This partnership allows us to make a direct, tangible impact in the community," said Rob Shabansky, Athletic Director at GateWay Community College. "By helping young players participate in soccer, we’re not just encouraging physical health—we’re reinforcing the structure, community, and confidence that support school success."
"We’re not just training athletes—we’re building confidence, character, and connection," said Coach Rizzo, founder of Arizona Soccer Skills Academy. "Kids who participate in structured programs show up more—not just to the field, but to life. Thanks to GateWay’s support, more families will have access to that kind of growth."
The GateWay Soccer Scholarship Fund will cover full tuition for select summer 2025 programs. Scholarships will be awarded to children ages 5–16 residing in the East Valley who face financial barriers to participation. The application is simple and values-based, focusing on opportunity and growth rather than paperwork or income verification.
This initiative represents a model for future collaborations between educational institutions and community programs. It supports GateWay’s broader mission of equity and access in education and aligns with Arizona Soccer Skills Academy’s vision of building future leaders through sport.
Applications are now open at www.azsoccerskills.com/scholarship. Local businesses and organizations interested in sponsoring additional scholarships are encouraged to contact info@azsoccerskills.com with the subject line “Sponsor a Player.”
