For many of us the holiday season is a time for celebration and connection. Personal style plays a big role in how we show up in our communities. From family gatherings and community events to workplace celebrations and casual get togethers, a polished look can help you feel festive, comfortable, and confident.
As a Cosmetologist, I feel like holiday style should be unique to you, professional if the occasion permits, and practical for everyone. Whether you are a student or working professional, you don’t need to follow every trend to look current. A few thoughtful choices can go a long way.
Hair: Festive Without the Fuss
Holiday hair should feel elevated but manageable. Styles that look great and hold up throughout busy days and long events are always a win.
Easy holiday hair ideas for all lifestyles:
-
Soft waves or loose curls for a classic, versatile look.
-
Low buns or sleek ponytails for polished simplicity.
-
Half-up styles that balance casual and refined.
Men:
-
Something as simple as just wetting your hands and running them through your hair can make a big difference.
-
For wavy hair just a pea sized amount of conditioner put on wet hair after the shower can reduce the frizz factor.
Pro Tip: Healthy hair is the foundation of any great style. Wearing a silk bonnet at night not only protects your hair from a rough night's sleep, it can also prolong your hairstyle. Not having to wash, dry and style your hair every day saves you time during this busy season.
Makeup: Glow Over Glitter
Holiday makeup doesn’t need to be heavy or dramatic to make an impact. The goal is to enhance natural features while adding warmth and brightness.
Timeless holiday makeup approaches:
-
Neutral or warm eye tones for subtle depth. I often just use a bronzer for eye shadow.
-
A fresh, even complexion with soft definition. A tinted moisturizer or BB cream with SPF is a staple for me.
-
Adding just a bright, fun lip color can be all you need! Lip colors such as berry, rose, or red often make complexions look more even.
Men:
-
Don’t skip the moisturizer. Everyone’s skin needs moisturizer especially during the winter months.
-
Lip balm, no one wants chapped or cracked lips.
Pro tip: You don’t have to go all out. I often tell my students that sometimes all you need is a bright lip color or some gloss for you to polish off your look and make your skin look brighter.
Wardrobe & Accessories: Simple, Intentional Choices
Holiday outfits don’t need to be elaborate to feel special. Clean lines, comfortable fabrics, and thoughtful accessories can elevate everyday looks. For me it’s a holiday t-shirt, some cute jeans and some comfy Converse shoes.
-
Ways to enhance your outfit:
-
Light jackets or cardigans
-
Simple clothing paired with fun holiday earrings (an absolute must for me).
-
Coordinated shoes and accessories for a cohesive appearance. Not anything crazy. For me it’s changing my watch band to leopard to match my leopard shoes.
Men:
-
Consider a nice tie that matches your significant other’s outfit.
-
A nice polo or sporty cardigan.
-
A fun holiday t-shirt with some comfy jeans may be exactly what you need to feel festive this time of year, and I’m here to support that!
Pro tip: Choosing one focal point of either hair, makeup, or accessories helps keep your look polished without feeling overwhelming.
Style With Professionalism in Mind
For those attending work events, school functions, or community gatherings, maintaining a professional appearance is something you may have to consider occasionally during the holidays.
-
Clothing should be clean, well-fitted, and appropriate for the setting.
-
Hair and makeup should complement but not distract.
-
Personal grooming and hygiene remain essential year round.
Pro tip: Scents can be distracting or bothersome in large settings so keep it light. These habits support confidence and leave a positive impression in both personal and professional environments.
Confidence Is Always in Style
Trends come and go, but your own personal style is what makes you YOU. The best holiday looks are worn by people who feel comfortable, confident, and authentic.
Pro tip: Don't be afraid to dress festively, even if it’s just some lip color/balm or earrings.
