GateWay’s Commitment to Student and Community Well-Being
By Dr. Ebony Anderson, Interim Dean of Student Engagement and Retention
At GateWay Community College, we believe that student success starts with genuine care. Every student deserves access to essential resources such as food, housing, and transportation, along with a supportive community. This enables them to focus on what truly matters: their goals, growth, and future.
Supporting Students, Empowering Futures
Many students face challenges beyond their coursework, struggling with real-life issues that can disrupt their educational journey. These challenges may include food insecurity, housing instability, and financial difficulties, which can hinder a student’s ability to reach their full potential.
At GateWay Community College, we are dedicated to addressing these issues directly. Through our Student Life Basic Needs Initiatives, we connect students with essential resources available both on and off campus. These resources include access to Gecko Grocery, St. Mary's Food Distribution, programs offered by external partners, transportation support, and emergency funding. Our goal is clear: no student should have to choose between meeting their basic needs and pursuing their education.
A Culture of Care and Connection
At GateWay, we believe education carries a responsibility to uplift not only oneself but also the community. Social responsibility is woven into the fabric of who we are as a college. Our students learn the value of giving back through leadership programs, service-learning opportunities, and community partnerships that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
We remind our students that being part of a community means showing up for one another. Every act of service, every shared resource, and every effort to support others strengthens the whole.
Lifting a Community, Together
When one student succeeds, the whole community benefits. At GateWay, we’re committed to meeting basic needs while fostering a culture of care that uplifts everyone.
As Interim Dean of Student Engagement and Retention, I am proud of the efforts made by our students, faculty, and staff. Together, we are creating a campus where compassion and accountability thrive, ensuring that every Gecko feels seen and valued.
At GateWay Community College, we empower students, thereby strengthening our entire community in the process.
