GateWay is the only Maricopa Community College that offers aesthetics, cosmetology, hair styling, nail technician and a specialized program for practitioners who wish to eventually become beauty and wellness instructors. These programs are considered clock hour programs, which are non-credit training programs that provide skills for quick entry into the workforce. All have specific year-round start dates, and you attend classes four days a week, Monday-Thursday.
Students in these programs learn their skills by practicing on mannequin heads, on each other and/or eventually serving actual clients, all with instructor supervision. Instructors supervise and receive feedback from clients to make sure you are providing adequate service. The school has a salon open to the public and holds clinics often.
You have to pass the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology exams to receive your respective license to practice. Visit the state board's website for details.
Click on the program link below for more details on each.
The Aesthetician program is world-class and provides new students with brand name equipment. You move to the clinic setting after you successfully complete the first 16 weeks of the program. The school has a salon open to the public. In the clinic setting, you will provide facials, waxing, makeup and back treatments to clients.
The Cosmetology and Hair Stylist programs provide much of the same training with regard to hair care. Cosmetology students will receive additional training in skin and nail services. After you complete your Basic class in your respective program, you move to the clinic setting. The school has a salon open to the public. In the clinic setting, you will provide various services under instructor supervision.
A nail technician is a trained professional who specializes in providing beauty-related services on nails. As a nail technician, you will perform manicures, pedicures, nail applications, and other beauty treatments performed by nail technicians. You will learn the skills necessary for establishing and maintaining a clientele; sanitation practices and requirements; and knowledge of state laws and business management skills specific to nail technicians.
Successful completion of your hours, with a score of 80% or higher, makes you eligible to apply for graduation to receive your certificate of competency but does not guarantee you a Nail Technician License in any state.
