Brazilian Cohort Attends GateWay

Monday, September 23, 2013

When you are at GateWay this fall and spring, you may hear more Portuguese spoken in the hallways or in the café than you have in the past. That’s because GateWay Community College is hosting 22 students from Brazil for the academic year.

GateWay is participating in a consortium of community colleges and universities across the country that will be hosting more than 1,000 students from Brazil during the 2013-2014 academic year.

“Students are coming to study academic/professional programs broadly falling under STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics),” says Raeann Nunez, International Studies student services coordinator. “They will gain familiarity with global challenges and trends to be able to participate in aiding the economy in their home country when they graduate.”

The students will be enrolled in academic ESL, as well as science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses during their stay.

The students are part of a Brazilian community college program that is funded through the Brazilian Science Mobility Program, sponsored by the Brazilian government. GateWay is one of four community colleges participating.
