Do I Need a High School Diploma or GED/HSE to Attend a Community College?

Many students are often left wondering, “Do I need a high school diploma to attend community college?” The short answer is no. You do not need a high school diploma, Testing CenterGED or High School Equivalency (HSE) to enroll in classes at GateWay Community College, however, if you want to receive financial aid to help pay for your classes, the federal government says you must have a high school diploma or GED/HSE in order to benefit.

What if I do not have a High School Diploma, can I take a GED test?

Yes, GateWay Community College offers GED testing at its Testing Center. You do want to prepare for this test as it has a cost. To help you with this, we have a partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County (LVMC), which offers free GED preparation courses.

Prior to enrolling in the GED test preparation courses, students must attend a four-hour orientation at the LVMC Main Center, located at 1616 East Indian School Road or the Lynn Reed Center, located at 729 East Hatcher Road.

For the GED, you will need to take a number of competency tests, which usually include Reading, Writing and Math assessments.

Also, keep in mind that certain programs have competitive requirements, which are based on additional industry requirements.
