GWCC’s inaugural cohort of RN-BSN graduates eagerly prepares to enter the workforce.

Tempe, Ariz., May 7, 2026 – On Thursday, May 14, 2026, 19 students from GateWay Community College Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) program will cross the commencement stage. They will join 1,100 nursing graduates from across Maricopa Community Colleges, including registered nurses and licensed practical nurses (LPNs). The 2026 cohort marks a milestone moment for GWCC, as they prepare to confer some of Arizona’s first RN-BSN bachelor’s degrees to students from a community college.

“We are very excited to celebrate this first class of BSN graduates,” said Dr. Amy Diaz, GateWay Community College President. “For most, choosing nursing is much more than picking a field of study; it’s a calling for the greater good, and I am personally looking forward to seeing these students contribute to making our community stronger and healthier.”

Two Years in the Making

In Fall 2024, GWCC welcomed its first cohort of RN-BSN students. Each of this year’s graduates previously completed their Associate in Applied Science in Nursing (RN) at one of the Maricopa Community Colleges, with 10 of the students completing their RN at GWCC. As the state’s most extensive integrated healthcare education system, Maricopa Community Colleges offers over 70 healthcare programs across its 10 colleges.

Opportunity Awaits

For Mark-Jayson S. Garcia, a student of the inaugural cohort, choosing to earn his RN-BSN through GWCC was rooted in the flexibility, affordability, and supportive environment created by faculty, instructors, and staff.

“The RN-BSN program at GateWay Community College has been such a meaningful part of my journey as a nurse,” shared Garcia. “I can honestly say I was never alone. My instructors were always there whenever I needed guidance or support. That level of care made a real difference for me and helped me stay confident and motivated, even during the more challenging moments.”

The program’s focus on real-world application and hands-on learning allowed Garcia to expand his critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills, giving him a “stronger sense of confidence.”

“Compared to other RN-BSN programs in the state, GateWay offers a high-quality education at a much lower cost. That made it possible for me to keep going in school without added financial stress, while still receiving great support and instruction,” said Garcia.

Helping Close Workforce Gaps

Arizona is facing a shortage of nurses, a challenge that affects all residents. As more people need healthcare, especially those requiring specialized care, the lack of nursing professionals strains the healthcare system, leading to longer wait times and reduced access to care. Across its 10 colleges, Maricopa Community Colleges educates nearly one-third of Arizona’s nurses, producing the highest number in the state. Now, graduates from GWCC’s RN-BSN and other nursing programs, including registered nurses, LPNs, and nursing assistants, are ready to help fill this workforce gap.

Maricopa’s Bachelor Programs

In addition to the first graduates of the RN-BSN program, Maricopa Community Colleges is anticipating over 300 graduates this year from bachelor's programs across the system, bringing the total to 600 since launching the first programs in Fall 2023.
