International Education Week at GateWay

Monday, November 26, 2012

During the second week of November, the GateWay community gathered to celebrate International Education Week by hosting a variety of events on campus. The pinnacle of these events was Tea and Coffee From Around the World, which took place at the IE Building and featured food and beverages from a number of countries.

“Tea and Coffee From Around the World celebrates the different cultures on-campus and increase awareness of our differences as well as our commonalities,” said Nancy Johnson, Co-Chair International Education Committee.

Attendees were welcomed by students and staff dressed in traditional attire and were invited to sample a variety of cuisines from regions including Africa, North America, Europe, far Asia, Mexico and South America, the middle East, South East Asia, and more.

In its second year since being open to the general community, attendance to the event was higher than last year and this trend is expected to continue as attendees demonstrated an interest in learning about other cultures.

“The event was part of our efforts to display cultural awareness and focus on global learning opportunities,” said Johnson.  “It was a true sharing experience as we were able to share food and knowledge on a variety of cultures.”

For those interested in pursuing additional international education opportunities, a booth was set up for GateWay’s Study Abroad in Prague Program. The program us currently open for registration for those interested in visiting Prague in the summer of 2013. For more information, please visit http://www.gatewaycc.edu/prague.

For the International Education Committee, the event presented an opportunity for better understanding.

“We would understand each other better if we knew more about each other and our culture,” adds Johnson.
