Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Radiologic Technology Program offer evening or part-time classes?
The Radiologic Technology Program does not offer an evening or part-time program option.
Standard operating hours for the program’s coursework and clinical rotations typically run between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Program Structure
The Radiologic Technology Program is an intensive and rigorous course of study designed to be completed on a full-time basis.
- Time Commitment: Students should plan to dedicate a minimum of 40 hours per week to program activities, including classroom instruction, lab work, and clinical rotations. Many students find additional hours necessary for independent study and review.
- Balancing Work and Study: While some students may need to work to support themselves during the program, the demanding schedule makes balancing employment and coursework challenging. Time spent working directly reduces time available for studying, which may impact academic performance.
- Academic Requirements: Students must maintain a minimum grade of “C” in all courses to remain in good standing and successfully complete the program.
Prospective students are strongly encouraged to arrange their schedules and finances to accommodate the significant time demands of this full-time program.
If I have a criminal record, will that prohibit me from being successful in this career?
Possibly. A criminal record may prevent you from participating in required clinical rotations, which are a mandatory component of the program.
Clinical agreements with partner healthcare facilities require that all students obtain and maintain the following clearances:
- A Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS).
- Verification that you are not listed on the Office of Inspector General (OIG) Exclusion List.
Students who are unable to obtain either required clearance will be prohibited from participating in clinical experiences and, therefore, will not be able to complete the program.
Additionally, all Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) healthcare students must pass a separate MCCCD background check within six (6) months of beginning their program of study.
Is there an opportunity for advanced placement in the program?
No. There is no opportunity for advanced placement in the program.
Effective December 31, 2021, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) ceased accepting advanced placement applications for the primary eligibility pathway. This means individuals with previous experience may no longer use that experience to bypass program requirements and earn an initial ARRT credential outside of the standard curriculum structure.
All students must complete the full accredited program to be eligible for certification and registration.
Is there an opportunity to transfer from another Radiologic Technology Program into the program offered at GateWay Community College?
No.
The Radiologic Technology Program at GateWay Community College does not accept transfer credit for core RAD courses (major-specific technical coursework). All students accepted into the program are required to complete the full curriculum as outlined by the college to ensure competency and meet accreditation standards.
What other classes can I take while waiting to start the program?
While waiting to begin the program, students may pursue additional coursework that can apply toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science: Diagnostic Medical Imaging and Therapy, available through a partnership with Northern Arizona University (NAU).
If this extended degree pathway interests you:
- A GateWay Community College advisor can assist you in selecting courses that meet transfer requirements.
- You must also speak directly with an NAU advisor at 602-286-8194 to ensure university requirements are met.
Can a graduated student find continuing education classes?
Yes. Graduates seeking to specialize or gain additional certifications can find continuing education courses and advanced certificate programs offered at GateWay Community College.
We offer programs and courses in the following imaging modalities:
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
- CT (Computed Tomography)
- Mammography
- Nuclear Medicine
- Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Where can I go for more information about the profession?
You can find detailed information regarding the profession, scope of practice, ethics, and certification requirements by visiting the following primary professional organizations:
- ASRT.org – The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) is the leading professional association for medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals.
- ARRT.org – The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is responsible for certification and registration of technologists in medical imaging, interventional procedures, and radiation therapy.
